Biden and Trump Agree to June Debate; No Live Audience Scheduled

(Ovichnews USA) - President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have both confirmed their participation in a televised general election debate scheduled for June 27th, to be hosted by CNN.

The announcement comes following negotiations between the two camps, with both candidates expressing eagerness to engage in a debate forum ahead of the November election. In a press release issued by CNN, it was revealed that the debate will commence at 9 p.m. ET and will take place at CNN's studios in Atlanta. To maximize the time allocated for the debate, no live audience will be present. Details regarding the moderators for the debate and other specifics will be disclosed at a later date by CNN. The agreement between Biden and Trump materialized swiftly after Biden proposed a departure from the conventional debate format by opting for two debates in a television studio. Trump, while expressing dissent over the exclusion of a live audience, acknowledged Biden's proposed dates and indicated his willingness to participate in the televised event. Accepting an invitation from CNN, Biden reaffirmed his commitment to engaging in constructive debate by stating, "Over to you, Donald. As you said: anywhere, any time, any place." In response, a Trump aide confirmed their acceptance of the CNN debate in Atlanta, acknowledging the absence of a live audience for the initial debate. Jen O'Malley Dillon, Biden's campaign chair, articulated in a letter to the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) that Biden would forego participating in CPD-organized debates and instead focus on engagements hosted directly by news outlets. The proposed debate timeline includes a first debate in late June and a subsequent debate in early September to align with the campaign season. Trump, via Truth Social, endorsed the proposed debate dates in June and September, and advocated for additional debates to enhance viewer interest. O'Malley Dillion outlined suggested rules for the debates, emphasizing firm time limits for responses and structured speaking turns to enable a balanced exchange of views. Furthermore, the VP debate, as per the proposal, is slated for late July post the Republican National Convention. The Biden campaign's opposition to CPD's debates stems from concerns over timing and audience size, with a preference for streamlined debates between the candidates in a television studio setting. As preparations for the upcoming debates progress, the dynamic between Biden and Trump remains at the forefront, with both candidates gearing up for a series of critical interactions leading up to the general election.
