He rose to become a samurai under the powerful feudal lord Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616) – on whom the character Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) is based. Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), meanwhile, is a mysterious Christian noblewoman who comes to wield great influence at court.
