(Ovichnews Africa) - At least 39 individuals, mostly migrants from the Horn of Africa, have lost their lives when their boat capsized off the coast of Yemen, as confirmed by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and local officials.
The ill-fated vessel, carrying 260 migrants, succumbed to the harsh elements on Monday, with survivors recounting the horror of the incident amidst strong winds. Rescuers are tirelessly searching for 150 individuals who remain missing, while the IOM has stepped in to offer assistance to 71 survivors. The migrants' journey, mainly comprising individuals from Ethiopia, was meant to be a transit through Yemen en route to Gulf states, as reported by local authorities in Rudum, located east of Aden. Hadi al-Khurma, director of the Rudum district, shared with Reuters news agency that the boat encountered its tragic fate before it could reach the safety of the shore. Despite the catastrophic circumstances, local fishermen and residents bravely managed to rescue survivors, who were informed of more missing migrants from the same vessel. The search mission is ongoing, with the incident promptly reported to the United Nations for further support and attention. Last year saw 97,000 migrants undertaking the perilous journey to Yemen from the Horn of Africa, despite the ongoing conflict in the region and recent hostile acts targeting ships in the Red Sea by Houthi forces. This event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by migrants seeking better opportunities and refuge, underscoring the urgent need for increased international cooperation to address the underlying issues driving such perilous journeys.
